Secondary lead processing contributes the vast majority of lead production. Nonetheless, the process does carry its own unique challenges that place a special need for testing and quality assurance. Unlike primary processing, secondary lead processing uses a vast array of feed material that includes lead–acid batteries, cable coverings, pipes, sheets and lead coated, or terne-coated steel. Even waste and dross from solders may be recovered for the small lead content. The major lead applications – batteries in particular – require extremely high purity levels of lead, i.e., very low levels (if any) of contaminating elements. This places great importance on the testing of lead ingots or the alloys being sold or procured, to ensure that they adequately meet or exceed the purity levels demanded by the intended applications. Such a requirement has specific and similar implications for lead producers and their customers. For producers, it implies that they need instruments that can accurately identify and quantify impurities in raw materials down to very low levels. This drives the refinement processes that are required. Therefore, for the same producers and also for their customers, the instruments should also be capable of identifying and quantifying the final purity level of the product, as well as the content of each potentially present impurity/contaminant. This presentation introduces the optical emission spectrometers that Metal Power have designed and optimized to meet the specific needs of the lead Industry. These instruments can also be used to analyze lead oxide powders without the need for capital expenditure on new equipment.
